We should take refuge in the Triple Gem – the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha the way a child regards her mother. When she’s fearful, she cries and runs to her. When she’s very happy, she shares her delight with her. Likewise, in another way, the Triple Gem protects us from all harm and leads us to permanent happiness.

Similarly when one dedicates even the smallest virtue to achieve enlightenment for the benefit of all sentient beings, it is like putting a drop of water in the ocean; that virtue will not be exhausted until you achieve supreme enlightenment. No matter how much you use the benefit arising from that particular virtue, it becomes inexhaustible. This example is very beneficial.”

Bodhi means enlightenment, the state devoid of all defects and endowed with all good qualities. Sattva refers to someone who has courage and confidence and who strives to attain enlightenment for the sake of all beings. Those who have this spontaneous, sincere wish to attain enlightenment for the ultimate benefit of all beings are called bodhisattvas. This wish for perfect enlightenment for the sake of others is what we call bodhichitta, and it is the starting point on the path.

~ His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso, “For the Benefit of All Sentient Beings”
