Have you started your holiday shopping? Every December the Unitarian church in Reston, Virginia where we have our Dharma classes hosts one of the largest alternative gift markets in the area. But if you missed it, you can participate via the Alternative Gifts International website.
The idea is simple, you choose a participating charity and make a donation in the name of a loved one. My parents, for example, are animal lovers, so I made a donation to the Friends of Homeless Animals. The online catalog lists everything from environmental groups to education, gender equality, medical services and many more. This is a thoughtful, heart warming way to share your love with those near and far. And the Alternative Gifts service is available not just during Christmas but year around so you can offer gifts for many special occasions.
