During the June 4 Path to Bliss teaching, Gyumed Khensur Rinpoche Losang Jampa explained an easy way to incorporate Dharma into daily life. By blessing everyday objects with the mantra Om Ah Hum, we transform them into perfect offerings for the Triple Gem. “Blessing” in this sense means transforming the object through the power of our minds, our motivation.
Rinpoche gave several examples. Before entering the house, you can bless it by reciting Om Ah Hum three times. “Om” purifies its ordinary contaminants, “Ah” transforms it into a divine palace”, and “Hum” makes it inexhaustible. Likewise, you can bless your clothes before putting them on, bless a meal before eating. The mantra is very powerful and contains the essence of all the Buddhas of the three times. By purifying, transforming and then making offerings to the Triple Gem (Buddha, Dharma, sangha) with the proper motivation, we accumulate merit. Otherwise, if we go about our day using ordinary objects out of attachment and self-cherishing, we are engaging in non-virtuous actions. Rinpoche mentioned that it’s beneficial to recite Om Ah Hum even if you’re not a very serious Dharma practitioner.
