The IMI Office recently announced the passing of Venerable Sophia. She took ordination in 1995 with His Holiness the Dalai Lama. She was one of Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s most devoted students. Venerable Osel in Taiwan wrote, “Ven.Sophia was also the director of FPMT Taipei Center and Shakyamuni Buddha Center. She was also the chief editor for the monthly magazine of FPMT Taiwan. Beside these, whenever Lama Zopa Rinpoche was teaching in overseas countries which required mandarin translation, Ven.Sophia would be the mandarin interpreter. She offered her life to her guru, FPMT and all of us”.
I have always considered Venerable Sophia a role model. She was very quiet and kept to herself, she was always spinning her prayer wheel and doing her practice. She had no time for chit-chat or pettiness, but she was friendly. Over the years I ran into her at teachings, and I last met her in December at His Holiness’s Janchub Lamrim teachings in India. By coincidence, we both stayed at Gaden Jangtse at Khen Rinpoche Losang Tsephel’s khangtsen. She ate quickly in mindful silence surrounded by the hustle and bustle of the dining room.
Please say some prayers for Venerable Sophia.
