This time of year in many parts of the country, we see many road kills – squirrels, raccoons, deer and many more. I narrowly avoided a raccoon tonight, but it might have been hit by the car directly behind me.
I heard a story on the radio about a small town that constructed an overpass for squirrels because so many are killed trying to cross the main street. The squirrels quickly figured out how to use the narrow bridges and many squirrels’ lives are saved every day. The town’s residents are so pleased that they’ve begun constructing more and more bridges.
Here’s a mantra that both Ribur Rinpoche and Lama Zopa Rinpoche recommend for liberating animals:
Mantra of Buddha Mitrugpa
NAMO RATNA TRAYAYA / OM KAMKANI KAMKANI / ROCHANI ROCHANI / TROTANI TROTANI / TRASANI TRASANI / PRATIHANA PRATIHANA / SARVA KARMA PARAM PARA NI ME SARVA SATTVA NANCHA SVAHA
So this is a good mantra to know by heart so you can repeat it whenever you come across an animal that has been killed.
