The whole world is burning

The whole world is burning.
The whole world is in flames.
The whole world is blazing.
The whole world shakes.

But the Buddha taught me the unshakable Way.
Ordinary people don’t practice it,
and there is nothing to which you can compare it.

When I heard his words
I lived in the joy of the teaching.

The three knowledges have been realized.
The Buddha’s teaching has been done.

Everywhere the love of pleasure is destroyed,
the great dark is torn apart,
and Death,
you too are destroyed.

excerpted from a poem by the Buddhist nun Sisupacala as published in First Buddhist Women by Susan Murcott. Parallax Press:Berkeley, 2006.
