Biographies of Himalayan Dharma Masters

The FPMT Masters Program at ILTK in Pomaia, Italy has started again. One of the many side-benefits of participating in the Masters Program is the extra resources that the tutor and students share. Before the teachings we chant the prayer to the Nalanda masters. In order to deepen our appreciation of who these masters were, our tutor shared this link: The Treasury of Lives: a biographical encyclopedia of Himalayan religions .

From the website: “The Treasury of Lives is a biographical encyclopedia of all known past masters of Himalayan religion, both Buddhist and Bon…..The Treasury of Lives Project is supported by an Advisory Committee made up of leading scholars in the field of Tibetan studies. The Treasury of Lives has institutional connections with the Tibetan Buddhist Resource Center (TBRC.org), an online library of Tibetan literature, and Himalayan Art Resources (Himalayanart.org), a virtual museum of Himalayan art. Treasury of Lives is a project of the Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation.”

The extensive collection of biographies can be searched by tradition, family, and location. For example, here’s the link to the Dalai Lama lineage. It includes a graphical timeline and short bios of each of the Dalai Lamas. (Note that this is the link to the beta website as of 3-28-2015). So far there are 14 different traditions in the encyclopedia.
