Will the real Devadatta please stand up?

“Actually, Devadatta was an emanation of the Buddha. What was the purpose of the Buddha emanating Devadatta, who opposed him in many ways? It was to display the Buddha’s activities, to show how one should act when one meets a “nasty character.” When the Buddha was alive, he had a disciple who was a fully ordained monk skilled in the three scriptural baskets. He stayed with Buddha for 25 years, but did not manage to generate faith in the Buddha. He concluded that the only difference between himself and the Buddha was that the Buddha had an aura of light around him, but other than that they were equal, so he left the Buddha. These points are difficult to explain.”
